About Dr. Ramin Shayan

A/Prof Professor Ramin Shayan – Plastic Surgeon, St Vincent’s Public and Private Hospitals, Co-Head, Lymphatic Biology Lab and Director of O’Brien Institute Department, SVI.

Ramin is an academic plastic and reconstructive surgeon who completed his medical degree, and a PhD in the molecular biology of the lymphatic system, cancer spread and lymphoedema, at the University of Melbourne.

Ramin has special clinical research interests in microsurgery, lymphoedema, radiation injury and fat grafting, amd is a director of The O’Brien Institute, Department, SVI, Associate Director (clinical) of SVI and co-heads labs investigating tissue engineering and regenerative medicine solutions to the molecular science behind diseases of cancer survivorship including lymphoedema, radiation injury and also lipoedema. Ramin is an editor of seven international academic journals and has published over 60 acedemic papers including in journals Nature, Cancer Cell and Nature Reviews.

Ramin has a dedicated practice to lymphoedema, having performed nearly over 500 microsurgical reconstructions for lymphoedema (including lymphatic bypass microsurgery, free lymph node transfer and lymphatic free flaps), and hundreds of debulking surgeries to enhance mobility, form and quality of life for lymphedema and Lipedema patients. He is passionate about enhancing health through building medical technology platforms, drug discovery and translating ideas into commercial products and outcomes for patients, in areas of unmet clinical need and sits on the board of the Lipedema World Alliance, The O’Brien Foundation and Gertrude Biomedical.
