About Dr. Katharina Morawitz
Katharina is a researcher at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the Health and Medical University in Potsdam, Germany, where she completed her doctoral work studying the cell biology behind lipedema.
Her work looks closely at what is actually happening inside lipedema fat tissue, right down to how individual cells communicate with one another. In March 2026, she and her colleague Julia Christina Gross published a paper in Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology exploring how tiny “message bubbles” called extracellular vesicles may help explain the pain, swelling, and unusual fat behaviour that people with lipedema experience. Their research offers a fresh way of understanding lipedema not as ordinary weight gain, but as a fat tissue condition with its own distinct biology.
At the Lipedema Canada Conference, Katharina will share the newest insights from this research and what it could mean for the future of lipedema care.
