About Prof. (PD) Dr. med. Mojtaba Ghods
Prof. (PD) Dr. med. Ghods is a globally recognized clinician-researcher whose work has significantly advanced the scientific understanding and surgical treatment of lipedema. Since founding the Department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Microsurgery and Hand Surgery at the Ernst von Bergmann Hospital in Potsdam and Bad Belzig, Germany in 2008, Dr. Ghods has built one of the largest specialized lipedema surgical programs in the world, performing several thousand lipedema procedures over the course of his career.
In December 2021, Dr. Ghods became the first scientist worldwide to complete a habilitation dedicated entirely to lipedema, a significant milestone reflecting the growing body of rigorous academic work now shaping the field. He leads the DGPRÄC Task Force on Lipedema, has contributed to the development of the German S2k Clinical Guideline on Lipedema, and his center is the largest of 14 study sites in the LIPLEG trial, which helped establish the basis for insurance coverage of lipedema surgery in Germany in 2026.
On the international stage, Dr. Ghods has been a key contributor to the growing global conversation around lipedema, including the Lipedema World Congress in Potsdam in 2023, which produced the Delphi Consensus-Based Position Paper on the Definition and Management of Lipedema, published in Nature Communications. He co-organized the Lipedema World Congress in Rome in 2025 and co-chaired the Boston Lymphatic Symposium 2026 at Harvard, where lipedema was included as a central scientific topic for the first time. He currently serves as President of the Lipedema World Alliance.
We are honoured to have Dr. Ghods serve as Scientific Co-Chair of the Lipedema Canada Conference. Alongside our broader scientific committee, he will help guide the content review process to ensure that all speakers and presentations meet a high standard of scholarly, evidence-based practice. His involvement marks a significant milestone for lipedema education in Canada, and an opportunity for clinicians and patients alike that has not existed here before.
